Joey Votto: Quarter-Billionaire

By now many of you know that Joey Votto signed a 10-year, $225 million contract extension with the Cincinnati Reds. In honour of Votto I'll make 19 observations about this contract (Votto wears number 19):
1) Joey Votto will be 29 years old this year (born in September of 1983).
2) He'll turn 40 in the final year of this contract extension (2023).
3) He has been the third best hitter in baseball over the last two seasons (.420 wOBA).
4) He has been the second most valuable player overall the last two seasons (14.2 WAR).
5) He has two years and $26.5million remaining on his current deal.
6) His new deal will commence in his year 31 season, when he'll likely be declining already.
7) He'll need to amass roughly 35 WAR from age 31 through age 40 (~3.5 per year).
8) An optimistic projection would have him total around 31 WAR over that time.
9) Todd Helton has amassed 25.7 WAR in the 8 seasons starting at age 31. He turns 39 this year.
10) Jeff Bagwell totaled 33.7 in the 8 seasons starting at age 31 and retired at 37.
11) Carlos Delgado tallied 18.5 WAR in 7 seasons starting at age 31 and retired at 37.
12) Jim Thome wracked up 35.2 WAR from his age 31 season to his age 40 season and still plays.
13) Eddie Murray put up 26.8 WAR from his age 31 season to his age 40 season and retired at 41.
14) From 2002 to 2011 only 25 hitters would have "earned" that contract.
15) Chipper Jones and Barry Bonds were the only ones to turn 39 in that time.
16) Barry Bonds was NL MVP at the age of 42.
17) Chipper Jones was 36 in his last all-star caliber season. He'll be 40 this year and plans to retire.
18) The Reds are apparently negotiating a new TV contract that makes Votto's contract affordable.
19) It appears that new TV money in MLB is going to elevate player salaries immensely.
